There have been many stories circulating the news of late, regarding asbestos related deaths. According to the Health and Safety Executive’s (HSE) 2014 report, 2,000 people die each year from lung cancer caused by asbestos.
Asbestos is something that we’re aware of, but it is not at the forefront of people’s minds. As it takes 10 to 40 years for symptoms to surface, how do we bring those accountable to justice?
A recent asbestos case in Italy has highlighted how important asbestos awareness and training is. The Italian Supreme Court stated that a person responsible for asbestos deaths could be found “guilty, but not punishable.” Due to the knowledge, understanding and training available today, this statement will not be applicable in years to come.
The HSE previously reported that more people die from asbestos related illnesses each year, than those killed in road traffic collisions. 30 tradesmen each week die every week here in the UK, due to asbestos exposure.
It’s never been more crucial to undertake training to protect yourself against asbestos. For more information visit our asbestos training page for more details.
